I
would like to welcome you on behalf of our faculty and staff to
the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The University
of Akron. A career in the rapidly expanding field of biomedical
engineering is indeed an exciting path for you to consider.
At The University of Akron, we have developed a series of challenging
curricula to meet the educational demands found in the variety
of fields of biomedical engineering. Our graduates are prepared
for immediate employment or advanced graduate education in
engineering or medical school. Biomedical Engineering began as a research institute at
The University of Akron in 1980 and became an academic department
in 1984. At that time we offered only a masters degree in
engineering – biomedical option and the Ph.D. in Engineering.
In 1998, we began offering an undergraduate degree in biomedical
engineering, in addition to the graduate education offerings.
The program is ABET Accredited. Currently we offer two tracks,
or areas of specialization, one in biomechanics and the other
in instrumentation, signals and imaging. Students in both
tracks have the option of participating in cooperative education
experiences. The faculty are proposing an additional, separate
track in biomaterials, which is currently part of the biomechanics
area.
Faculty in biomedical
engineering are engaged in a variety of research areas both
on campus and
in collaboration with
other researchers in the health care institutions and industry
in the local region. Students benefit by actively participating
in these research endeavors.
